Did not work out against the Mongols when they arrived.Īs an answer I conscripted vast armies of mounted knights from all over the empire. Generally speaking the most difficult method of beating them is attacking them head on with defending against them being the next most difficult. My original army compositions consisted mostly of Feudal Knights ( mounted and on foot ), Spear Sergeants and Militia Crossbowmen. Once you eliminate them all they become rebels and generally move about less coordinated and can be dealt with individually. Even if you have to lose the battle, killing a leader might prove more valuable a reward then letting him get away if you are trying this method anyways). (keep in mind that if you do battle them, your primary target is the general. If you have a massive amount of gold you may even be able to use a diplomat to bribe one of them to join you. If you can get three to five up to level 7 or higher you might just be able to assassinate all the mongol leaders when they invade and turn them all into rebels. So train a few assassins early on and farm exp for them off rebel captains and other faction's units. The other method is a bit harder but is much more hilarious. You might have to fight a few offbalanced armies, but if you can win a few slightly outnumbered battles in a row you're golden. (also when you /do/ attack them, do your best to separate their mobs and avoid being outnumbered in one battle.

Even if you do have to wage war on them later on, you will have much more time to build a sufficient army.

A high level diplomat and maybe even a gift of something could sweeten the deal with them and no longer will you have to worry about them destroying you. I've used two methods in the past that generally worked better than the above.įirst, why deal with them if you can make friends. If you cant get good relations then buckle up and set defensive lines and hold. From there you need to attempt, and i mean attempt for it probably wont work, to establish good relations with western factions that border you, and have as much trade with the west and north as you possibly can, you woill need th money to grow you collection of cities into a true empire. I'm going to assume you're playing as a middle east located faction, your goals should be to take over all of the middle east by 50-75 turns in. Not only do they spawn pretty early in the game they also spawn highly trained, like to the point you would never see a unit achieve in your own army(expect calvary, but ill touch up on that later) and to make it all the worse thay spawn with an army fit for an empire of roughly 30 high pop cities, w/o having to defend the cities, greeeeat. Now that factions are known lets take a look at the mongols, they spawn roughly at turn 100-150 in some cases it can happen at extremes. Factions that generally worry about the mongols include Byzantium, Egypt, Turks, Russia, Poland, Hungary and in some cases the H.R.E and venice(only if you manage to be a monster with these factions and spread very rapidly from there very strong early game military possibilities). But if your brave enough to pick a faction like egypt, or isane enough to be byzantium(one of the worst start offs and falls off completely end game) then you need to do alot in a short amount of time. First things first, yoour faction your playing as means alot, as most western factions wont deal with them its always safe and easy to play one.

Ah a good question, ive spent many nights playing this game over and over again losing to the mongol horde, the mongols truely live up to their legacy in this game.
